Gate Valve Overview
Gate valve is a device where the gate moves up and down in a straight line with the valve stem. The materials used for gate valves include 304, 316, and 321 stainless steel, represented as Z41H-16P.
The gate valve’s opening and closing part is the gate, which moves perpendicular to the fluid flow. Gate valves can only be fully opened or fully closed; they cannot be used for flow adjustment or throttling. The gate has two sealing surfaces, usually forming a wedge shape. The wedge angle depends on the valve’s specifications, typically around 5°, and 2°52’ for lower temperatures.
The gate can either be made as a solid piece, called a rigid gate, or as a slightly flexible piece, called an elastic gate. The elastic gate allows for slight deformation, which helps with manufacturing and adjusts for any small errors in the sealing surface angle.
Gate Valve Features
Gate valves feature a rising or falling valve. Since the stem is connected to the seat, the stem rises to provide a visual indication of valve position, and the seat and stem rise and operate the valve together. Non-rising stems may have a slider thread on the upper end of the stem to indicate valve position, due to the upward travel of the gate or the threads downstream do not raise or lower the stem. Stems are used underground or where vertical space is limited
